Poole (Pool) Suction
Multi-hole perforated suction — a cylindrical tube with a perforated outer sleeve that prevents the suction tip from grabbing and injuring tissue when the abdomen is full of fluid.
Design
- Inner suction tube inside an outer perforated sleeve
- Multiple small holes along the sleeve distribute suction across the cylinder
- Prevents tissue capture — omentum, bowel, and other structures cannot be drawn into the tip when the field is flooded
Key Uses
- Large-volume fluid evacuation (blood, ascites, irrigation) during abdominal cases
- Evacuation during intraperitoneal spillage
- General abdominal / pelvic irrigation
Contrast with Yankauer
The Yankauer is preferred when suction volume is moderate and the tip won't be in contact with delicate tissue. The Poole is preferred when the field is flooded and the surgeon cannot direct the suction tip away from adjacent structures.
