Female Urethral Dilation

Female urethral dilation uses calibrated dilators to enlarge a narrowed female urethra, most commonly resulting from recurrent urethral instrumentation, inflammation, or surgical scarring. The short length of the female urethra means strictures are less common than in males but can cause significant obstructive voiding symptoms and recurrent urinary tract infections. Dilation provides symptomatic relief but carries high recurrence rates; definitive reconstruction may be required for refractory cases.
